A provisional patent application is a type of patent application that allows you to establish an early filing date for your invention and to use the term “patent pending” for up to one year. Some of the advantages of a provisional patent application are:

However, a provisional patent application will not result in a patent on its own. You must file a nonprovisional patent application within one year of the filing date of the provisional patent application to benefit and claim priority from the earlier filing date of the Provisional and to obtain a granted US patent.
