To begin your hunt to locate a patent, the first step is to gather as much information as possible about the patent you are interested in. Such as the patent number, the name of the inventor, name of the assignee or company that may own the patent, the product name, or any other relevant keywords.

Enter the patent information in the search bar of one of the above search engines, such as the name of the inventor, or keywords related to the patent. Simply type in the patent keywords related to the patent in the search bar and hit enter. This will bring up related patents to your search query.  Sift through the patents to see if any of the patents have the inventor name you are looking to find.  Open the patent and read the Abstract to see if this is the patent you are looking to locate.

Moreover, if you don’t have the patent number or inventor’s name but you know the product name and keywords, try a General Search Engine like Bing, Google, Duck Duck. Type in the product name and keywords in the search bar and hit enter. These Search Engines sift through vast amounts of data to find the most relevant results.  This will bring up related product information to your search query.  Sift through the links to see if you can locate a company name, inventor name, or a patent number.   Use this information to circle back and add to your dedicated patent search engine tools to see if you can locate the patent.
